Dear Aspiring Rap Superstar & Friend,
I'm sure you sometimes stare at the t.v. in disbelief just like me when watching some of the hip hop music videos, and especially some of the most recent music award ceremonies.
Like you, I scratch my head and ask,
"How did this guy win a Grammy?"
"How did this garbage go platinum?"
In all honesty, it has probably made you and me both think about doing something else sometimes. The thought is, if that crap is what people like and want to buy, then count me out.
Let me be clear about what I do...

I am not a rapper, but I am a music producer who works with rappers and singers from all over the world.
I've also created music used in popular t.v. shows and commercials, and have produced songs for top artists in Europe and the United Kingdom as well.
So even though I don't rap like you, I completely understand the disapointment you feel as a rap artist.
After analyzing the industry, I have figured out why those garbage rappers succeed. I'm sure you already know the answer as well as I do.
Yes, there are a number of things that contribute to their success...
...but one of the biggest things that helps them make it is the hip hop beats that they use.
Without naming any names (although I'm sure you can probably guess some of the rappers I"m talkin' about), there are a number of rappers who have won awards, and even Grammys.
But...
Do you think that instead of some of those particular rap artists going on stage to accept the awards, it should have been the producers going on stage instead?
Because in some of these cases, having super hot hip hop beats is what allows some of these garbage rappers to survive. Now, some artists, most artists make it because of hard work and a willingness to invest in themselves as much as possible.
Marketing, my friend, is another key to success as a rap/hip hop artist. But one thing about music in general, especially urban styles: Rhythms and melodies move people more than words.
In movies, just about every director will tell you that a movie is 2/3 sound/music, and only 1/3 picture & dialogue. This also applies to urban music styles such as hip hop and r&b.
Don't believe me?
Go to a group of young teens (who buy a large share of hip hop records) and just start rapping with no beats. Some of the people will move, nod their head a little bit if you're good, or just stare at you, unless they are another group of aspiring rappers who feels you.
Go to the same group and play just a pure instrumental of a super hot beat, no rapping or lyrics, and see how much more that group of people reacts. Some will start dancing, and some will nod real hard and make an ugly face with it.
But one thing is for sure, they will react more to the beat by itself than they will to your lyrics by themself.
So while both hip hop beats and lyrics are important,
2/3 of hip hop music is about the beats, and
1/3 about the lyrics.
Think about it...
Some of these garbage rappers aren't saying anything in their songs. As a matter of fact, you can't even understand anything some of them are saying, but because of the hot hip hop beats that they use, they go platinum.
So if you feel that you have true skills as an up-and-coming or established rap artist, then stop scratching your head like I used to do in wonder about how these terrible cats are making it. Just do yourself a favor and download hot professional hip hop beats so that you can take the throne. But since you have true skills, your success won't be a here today gone tommorrow one.
If you are as good as you believe you are, and are willing to invest in your talent as much as these other guys invest in their non-talent, then you can have a rap career that lasts for decades.
