Rap Beats
Rap Beats are crucial to a rap artist's success nowadays.
Although most up-and-coming artists understand that the right rap beats can be a valuable asset to their music, some artists still seem to miss the boat when picking beats that fit their performance style.
They either settle for rap beats that are cheap and poorly produced, or they try to pick rap instrumentals that work well for other artists, but do not work for themselves.
In today's music industry, up-and-coming artists are usually paying so much attention to the artists that they aspire to be, that they don't realize that their own natural talent is already unique. However, they spend too much time in the studio trying to perform like their rap idols, and lose the unique edge that would make them stand out.
The fact that they also try to pick rap beats that are similar to "Lil Wayne" or "Jay Z" doesn't help this issue much at all.
If new hip hop artists spent more time listening and really understanding their own style, then they would naturally find the rap beats that really help their talent shine. There are a few things that an artist should keep in mind if they are to find the right rap beats to fit their style and help them sound their best.
Tone of voice - An artist should pay attention to the tone of their own voice and select rap beats that compliment it. This is where it can help to understand some basics about music theory, tones, notes, etc. Most new rap artists will not pay attention to these details, so if you do, your talent will automatically have a chance to stick out above tons of other would be rap artists
Speed of flow - Are you a fast, medium, or slow speed rapper? Pay attention to how you flow, but make sure that you rap at a speed that makes your lyrics crisp, clean, and allows people to understand what you are saying. Having an understanding of your speed of flow will empower you to pick rap beats that compliment your speed style. Also, having diversity can be helpful, but you want to be sure that you are able to pick rap beats that compliment whichever direction you go.
Subject of rap songs - The style of rap beats that you select should enhance the subject that you are talking about in your song. There are tons of examples of what happens when a good rap artists records the wrong type of song to the wrong type of rap instrumental. What do you like to talk about the most when you write new rap songs? Are you a political, dark, uplifting rapper? Whatever your style, make sure that you have the rap beats to make the mood felt. In a lot of cases, the music is 2/3 of the song experience.
